Vintage Ganesh Wall hanging – Birds and Animals decorated with Gold Sequins

£290

This piece is unusual having the toran decorated throughout with gold sequins – with its festive feeling and beautiful colours it would be a striking and vibrant addition to a room.  A vintage Ganesh door hanging, providing an auspicious welcome and the blessings of Ganesh, the elephant-headed God of good fortune and happiness, on either side he is flanked by Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and purity, sitting on her lotus blossom. Brightly coloured embroidered silk flowers, peacocks, horses, elephants, palm trees, dancers and leopards decorate the rest of the toran, including butter churners making divine butter for the gods and Krishna, playing the flute with two cows. In addition there are Hindu symbols of peace. Flowers embroidered with Sasha mirror work surround the piece and the border has three coloured bands which are finished with a red and green triangle design with gold sequins. A red trim. It has 45 cotton hanging loops. Made by the farming (Kanbi) communities of Saurashtra. Good condition with some discolouration due to age. Circa 1960. with
