Pair Of Vintage Applique Sankhia With Pennants

£380

A pair of Sankhia in excellent condition and decorated with beautifully executed applique Katab (from the English cut-up). Applique work is likely to have been introduced by European missionaries in the 1800s. Each Sankhia has five hanging tasselled pennants, depicting mango leaves. The mango leaf is a symbol of good luck and provides a welcoming invitation to gods and people alike. Cotton applique, on a double layer of cotton. Good condition. Gujarat c1920.
