Vintage Ganesh Door hanging with Red Trim and Red Cotton Frill

£270

This piece would look beautiful as a wall hanging in any setting but could also add a dash of colour to an alcove, above a double bed or over an arch. A traditional vintage door hanging, providing an auspicious welcome and blessings of Ganesh, the elephant-headed God for good fortune and happiness. At his feet sits Krauncha, his mouse. Either side of him are two palm trees followed by Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, seated in a lotus blossom. Lord Krisna plays his flute to two attendant sacred cows. Black elephants, brightly coloured parrots, peacocks, goats, tigers and horses adorn the rest of the toran, amongst delicately embroidered flowers featuring shisha mirror work. A string of red hot chilli peppers, signifying warmth and friendship, line the border of flowers. A bright red cotton frill finishes off the inner arch with a red trim with 3 hanging loops on either vertical edge and a further 8 across the top. Excellent condition with a few small discolourations due to age. Made by the farming (Kanbi) communities of Saurashtra. Circa 1960.
