Fine Vintage Coverlet In Suf Silk Embroidery On Cream Cotton

£290

An exquisite vintage rumal (Coverlet), finely hand-embroidered in flat Gujarati suf (meaning neat and clean) stitch. It is stitched in silk on a single layer of cream cotton, with a black silk-stitched border. Suf stitching requires painstaking skill. The geometric patterns are created with great accuracy by meticulously counting the warp and weft to achieve symmetry. Suf stitching originated in the Sind region, and was bought to Gujarat and Rajasthan with the movement of people, when India was partitioned in 1948. Silk stitching on cotton. Tiny hole and some discolouration on the cream background. Sind or Rajasthan, mid twentieth century.
